You may remember Keap’s Waves candle from when we reviewed it last year, delving into both the sleek, modern (and eco-friendly) packaging and bright fragrance. Reminiscent of a blissed out summer day, notes of clean linen fused with a whiff of the great outdoors make for a soothing scent. They describe the experience as “floating, suspended in water.” With a natural coconut base, the fresh blend of sea salt, driftwood, seaweed, and star anise can infuse your home for days on end in a 45-hour burn.
Needless to say, there was a lot that we liked about this candle; but it wasn’t quite perfect. We had some issues including the wick burning down faster than the wax could evaporate, causing it to snuff itself out. We also had difficulty with the packaging. However, upon posting our last review, we received a lovely note from Keap co-founder, Steve Tracy, addressing the issues and explaining some of the new processes they had since put in place to prevent the self-snuffing. They had implemented a new burn-testing procedure for every new batch of wax and fragrance to help catch any issues before candles are determined as ready to be sent out.
He even sent us a new Waves candle (along with several other amazing smaller scent samplers). We immediately took the candle out of the box, and are happy to report that it was, in fact, free of wick and packaging issues! Of course, we followed the standard candle-burning rules, which include keeping the wick trimmed to 1/8 of an inch, letting the candle wax pool completely during each burn, and only burning for four hours at a time, which helps preserve the life of the candle.
The replacement candle exudes same clean, fresh scent as the first. It’s subtle, but so bright and happy that we can’t help but feel like we’re relaxing at the beach—a much needed respite in the office, especially on these chilly and sometimes rainy winter days.
The packaging is still cool as ever—ultra stylish and comes equipped with matches and even a coaster. Keap is also virtually zero-waste and uses biodegradable and plastic-free materials, including the removable candle labels! You can reuse the glass vessel as a drinking glass, or, if you are a subscriber, you can return the empty vessel to Keap free of charge. They also donate 25% of their net profits to SolarAid, an organization that provides solar lamps to people without access to electricity. The founders are clearly passionate about making the world a better place with their candles; and have killer customer service to boot!
Unsurprisingly, we’re incredibly impressed by Keap’s level of service and commitment to the environment. If you’re looking for a fun, fresh, and modern candle that doesn’t break the bank, their nature-inspired collection won’t disappoint. All ethically made in their Brooklyn, NY studio, the scents are nostalgic—evocative of places like wood cabins, hot springs, northlands, as well as experiences with sweet, floral notes like wild figs, grapefruit + yuzu, and lavender + petals.
